by Elizabeth Scovil (Author)

This book was originally published in 1894, and remains a valuable resource for any person responsible for the care of children in any era. The book stresses the importance of a child's strong emotional and physical well-being and provides practical advice on achieving the critical balance between the two. Topics covered include hygiene, nutrition, sleep, exercise, praise and discipline, development of self-esteem, and education.

Elizabeth Robinson Scovil (1849-1934) was a prominent nurse and writer. She is considered one of the early American advocates for the rights of nurses, mothers and children - and for a fair acknowledgement of the critical role each plays in the honorable duty of caring for children.

Ms. Scovil's most influential books are The Care of Children and Preparation for Motherhood. Her writings "so changed women's lives that when she traveled by train in British Columbia to attend a meeting of the National Council of Women, groups of women gathered at station platforms, calling her name so they could thank her for the gift of knowledge." (Scovil Obituary, Meadowlands: A Chronical of the Scovil Family).

This book was edited by Jonathan D. Savage, Esq. and Mikesch Muecke, Ph.D.
