by Annie K. Cunningham (Author)

This book will become a tool to guide you in writing the things that we so easily forget as years go by. Illustrations and photographs, traditional manuscript writings have been provided in this book. There is joy in reading about the organizers and contributors in Dallas County, and the part others played in shaping its history. For many contributors, this chapter has been closed, and to others it's only a beginning.

The purpose of this book is to give an early version of the origination, consolidation, location, and transportation of Dallas County agencies, institutions, and people, who played a great role in the lives of individuals. The dual careers as a mother and an educator provided a complete perspective on enlightening the constituents of Dallas County in becoming aware of its rich heritage.

Author Biography

Annie K. Cunningham is a Selma native and was educated in the Dallas County School System. After graduating with honors from R. B. Hudson High School, she obtained her Associate of Arts Degree from Selma University. Her educational efforts continued as she obtained a Bachelor's, a Masters and an Education specialist Degree in Mathematics and Science from Alabama State University. For the last thirty-nine years, Mrs. Cunningham has devoted her time and energy toward teaching her students to be the best that they can be and to strive for academic excellence. Mrs. Cunningham's dedication and commitment has been demonstrated in the classrooms of Brantley, Tipton, Keith, Shiloh (Sardis) and most recently at Southside High School. She not only has taught elementary and high school students, but she has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Concordia College. Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Cunningham is an active member of West Trinity Baptist Church, where she continues to educate as a Sunday school teacher, and sings in the senior choir. Her organizational membership includes the Alabama Education Association, National Educational Association, the Dallas County Professional Educator's Association and the R. D. Nesbitt Sr. Assembly No. 205 of the Golden Circle. She has served as a past Matron of Sojourner Truth Chapter No. 65 Order of Eastern Star. Each week, Mrs. Cunningham serves as hostess for a Cunningham-Kelly Bible Study. As a model citizen, she serves as a notary for the State of Alabama. As a parent and aunt, Mrs. Cunningham assisted her son and many of her nephews and nieces in obtaining quality education and to be productive citizens. Throughout her teaching career, Mrs. Cunningham has always tried to uphold her motto. "If I have helped at least one student to reach his/her educational goals, then my teaching has not been in vain." Now that her retirement from school teaching is here, Mrs. Cunningham plans to increase her Biblical knowledge and understanding by pursuing a degree in theology.
