by Jerome C. Crichton (Author), Keith A. Burton (Foreword by)

In a world of theological snap judgments, where doctrines are often wielded as weapons, Measuring Twice, Cutting Once is a profound call to careful, humble, and courageous reflection. Jerome C. Crichton challenges the "sentries" of religious tradition, not with rebellion, but with a deeper faithfulness to the God revealed in Jesus Christ.

This groundbreaking work dares to re-measure long-held assumptions on some of the most pressing issues in modern faith: the problem of evil, the nature of sin, divorce, the Sabbath, women in ministry, and the church's response to queer identities. Crichton masterfully distinguishes between the organic, Spirit-led ekklesia and the man-made institutional church, arguing that true authority belongs to Christ alone.

Measuring Twice, Cutting Once is for anyone who has ever been marginalized for asking hard questions. It is an invitation to move beyond black and white certainty and into the complex, beautiful colors of a God whose thoughts are not our thoughts. This is not a book of easy answers, but a faithful guide for those who believe that good theology--done with prayer, study, and grace--is the path to liberation.

Author Biography

Jerome C. Crichton, DMin, PhD, is an interdisciplinary scholar whose research bridges theology, psychology, sociology, history, and cultural critique. He holds doctoral degrees in ministry and psychology from United Theological Seminary, Dayton, OH and Alliant International University, San Francisco Bay Area, and his work engages religion and theology, sociology and psychology, history and philosophy with intellectual rigor and cultural sensitivity. His scholarship speaks to reflective readers navigating contested domains of meaning and justice, graduate students, and academics.

Dr. Crichton serves as adjunct professor of psychology at Alliant International University and Diablo Valley Community College in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is also Senior Pastor at Every Word Ministries, where he integrates scholarly insight with pastoral practice. In addition to his academic work, he is a recording artist with two solo albums--Celebratin' Good Dayze (2014) and TransAtlantic Journey (2025)--which explore themes of identity, spiritual connection, and cultural reflection.
