Author Biography

E. W. HENGSTENBERG (1802 - 1869) was a German Protestant theologian and exegete. He was educated by his father, a Lutheran clergyman. In preparation for his studies at the newly-founded University of Bonn (which he entered at the age of nineteen), Hengstenberg grounded himself thoroughly in philology and philosophy. Above all he gave himself to Arabic. From 1824 to 1829, he served as Professor of Theology at Berlin. In 1827 he became Editor of the Evangelische Kirchenzeitung, a medium through which he had a wide influence on the religious life of his time. He maintained an interest in defending evangelical truth with fearless daring, undaunted by the attacks of critics.
